The birthplace of the Hells Angels is the ultimate choice for a motorcycle ride, but California’s a big state, so you’ve got to know the right places to go for a thrilling experience. Luckily, California features dynamic landscapes and scenery, which make each experience entirely unique and exciting. Whether you just got your first Harley or are just always on the lookout for new places to ride, check out this list of top three places to take your bike before you leave the Golden State.
Angeles Crest Highway
Rumored to be a bike testing spot for motorcycle aficionado magazines, Angeles Crest Highway begins at La Cañada Flintridge, weaves through the Angeles National Forest and stops at Newcomb’s Ranch Restaurant and Bar. The road features several twists and turns with hills that take you up and down for a ride that will test even the most experienced bikers. As you drive, you’ll also take in awesome views of Los Angeles and even a glimpse of Catalina island. Stop at Newcomb’s once you arrive for a refreshing beer and burger before heading back home.
Ben Lomond to Alice’s Restaurant
Beginning at the quaint town of Ben Lomond, this route takes you through the enchanting Bay Area Peninsula. Start out on State Route 9 in Ben Lomond and head north. Stay on this route until you hit the intersection with state Route 236 (Big Basin Highway). Turn right and then follow State Route 9 until you hit state Route 35 (Skyline Boulevard). Head north on 35 right to Alice’s Restaurant. The two-lane road features vineyards and wilderness on both sides, but make sure to pay attention to the path ahead because you’ll frequently wind in and out of tall trees. The roads aren’t exactly new on this path, so you might experience some bumps. However, riders with even moderate skills should handle the road with no problem. Watch out for Bay Area fog, which can sometimes reduce visibility.
A scenic loop
If you’re looking for a ride that will take you away from the real world for a while, this adventurous route is a fitting choice for seeing both sides of the Sierra Mountains. This route actually begins in Reno, N.V., heads south, then west – past the southern shore of Lake Tahoe – then around the Stanislaus National Forest, Yosemite National Park and Sierra National Forest. You can weave through towering peaks and zip around deep, narrow, twisting and turning canyons for a surreal experience that puts your skills to the test. Be sure to check out these awesome landmarks along the way: General Sherman Tree, the Giant Forest, Southern California groves, Lake Isabella, the Film History Museum and Mammoth Lakes. If you don’t want to commit to a week-long ride, just cut the trip short to avoid getting burnt out.
Riding motorcycles is all about the thrill. In the event that an accident does occur, you want to be fully prepared beforehand to act fast and appropriately. In some cases, you might even be entitled to legal compensation for the damages incurred, so you’ll want to contact a lawyer who understands motorcycle accidents. To ensure your sightseeing rides are safe, take all of the necessary precautions while riding, such as wearing a helmet, signaling to other drivers and maintaining a safe speed.
